Glenview, IL—The General Board of Pension and Health Benefits (GBPHB) today announced that the agency’s Center for Health was among 65 U.S. employers honored by the National Business Group on Health (NBGH) with its 2013 Best Employers for Healthy Lifestyles award, presented at the annual Leadership Summit in Washington D.C. on May 22, 2013. The Summit is sponsored by the Business Group’s Institute on Innovation in Workforce Well-being.

This is the second year GBPHB has been recognized by the NBGH for its commitment and dedication to promoting a healthy workplace, encouraging United Methodist Church clergy, lay workers and their families to support and maintain healthy lifestyles. The design and implementation of health plan program offerings under the GBPHB’s self-insured HealthFlex plan currently covers 11,500 participants and their families—a total of 22,000 covered individuals.

GBPHB General Secretary Barbara Boigegrain noted, “The Center for Health continues a denominational approach supporting the wellness and well-being of UMC clergy and lay workers in support of mission and ministry. With this continuing recognition, the plans and programs offered under HealthFlex are demonstrated to be among the best in support of healthy lifestyles offered by major U.S. employers.”

Among the top U.S. corporations and health institutions receiving recognition in the GBPHB category are Fidelity Investments, State Farm, Target, Walgreens, UNUM and Chrysler Group LLC.

HealthFlex Health Plan
HealthFlex program offerings include: biometric screenings, health assessment, walking program, health coaching, online wellness tools, emotional health supports, and targeted communications for preventive screenings and condition management. These offerings are aligned with individual needs across the health continuum. HealthFlex’s wellness program is anchored by data, including health and disability claims, health risk assessment results, and biometric screenings. High engagement in assessment and screening is critical to accurately assessing health, risk, and readiness to change among the clergy and laity of the UMC.

In addition to the HealthFlex plan and its associated wellness programs, the Center for Health administers denominational wellness programs for over 35,000 individuals. The Center for Health also supports United Methodist annual conferences and other affiliated groups by providing research and information on clergy health and well-being, consultation about health and health care-related topics, and coordination of health-related networks throughout the denomination.

Helen Darling, president and CEO of the NBGH, commented: “We are proud to honor GBPHB for its ongoing commitment to providing lifestyle improvement programs that encourage healthy lifestyles for their employees. They are among an elite group of organizations that are leading the way to promoting healthy workplaces and lifestyles…we congratulate them on receiving this award.”
