General Conference 2028
General Conference, The United Methodist Church’s highest legislative body, meets every four years. The next General Conference is May 8-16, 2028, in the U.S.—Minneapolis, Minnesota. This page is your resource for information about Wespath’s General Conference 2028 petitions.
About Wespath and Our Work
Wespath serves over 100,000 participants across the U.S. and around the world. We administer benefit plans and programs that support the financial and health well-being for clergy, lay employees and retirees. Wespath serves as a financial steward for our benefit plan participants and over 170 mission-based institutional investors.
Our name honors our Wesleyan heritage and our commitment to a path for financial and well-being stability for those we serve—today and for future generations.
Investing as Faithful Stewards
“I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the growth.”
1 Corinthians 3:6 (NRSVUE)
Wespath is preparing the soil to help United Methodists around the world have conversations about the faithful stewardship of money and resources.
Wespath is planning discussions with United Methodists in the United States, Africa, the Philippines and Europe about how to best use finances to support their values and the Social Principles.
As a facilitator of these conversations, Wespath is embarking on a collaborative process that aims to cultivate a broad dialogue with the worldwide United Methodist Church (UMC) about what it means to be a faithful steward of money and resources. This will include engagement on Wespath’s approach to responsible investing but we will also seek to listen and learn from a wide variety of United Methodists across the connection about how they are practicing stewardship in the many ways they invest personally, institutionally and as a community. The hope is that this discernment can culminate in legislation going into General Conference 2028 that reflects the diversity of perspectives and collective wisdom of the worldwide Church. If you would like to stay up to date on Wespath’s ongoing efforts to engage the UMC on being a faithful steward both in the U.S. and in non-U.S. regional conferences, you can sign up to receive emails focused on those efforts here.
Wespath began this conversation by organizing a two-day gathering in September 2025 at Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary dedicated to discussion around Paragraph 717. This is the Paragraph in The Book of Discipline that most specifically speaks to responsible investment. More information about that event can be found in the information below.

Frequently Asked Questions
Paragraph 717 of The Book of Discipline (Discipline) serves as the UMC’s primary governing text for sustainable and socially responsible investing. It offers crucial guidance to United Methodist general boards, agencies and institutions, including Wespath, that seek to invest in alignment with Church values. Over the years, Paragraph 717 has been the source of numerous debates and legislative contests at General Conferences, especially regarding divestment petitions related to fossil fuels and issues concerning Israel and Palestine.
