What is the Comprehensive Protection Plan?

The Comprehensive Protection Plan (CPP) is a core benefit for eligible United Methodist clergy and their families. Its design is two-fold. It helps provide income and security if you become unable to work due to disability. It also provides financial support to your family in the event of your or your dependent’s death.

CPP is self-insured and funded by contributions from your local church, plan sponsor or annual conference and is administered by Wespath.

Who is Covered

You’re generally eligible for CPP if:

  • You meet service and compensation criteria, such as a full-time episcopal appointment and plan compensation equal to or greater than a minimum percentage of the Denominational Average Compensation (DAC).
  • Plan sponsors may also choose to cover clergy appointed at three-quarter time.
  • You are full-time appointed to an entity beyond the local church and that employer sponsors the plan.

Because eligibility rules and compensation thresholds can vary, contact your annual conference or employer   for full details about how this plan applies to you.

How This Helps You and Your Family

CPP is meant to give you confidence in your financial foundation—whether you’re actively serving in ministry, preparing for future transitions or planning for your family’s well-being. It does this by helping:

  • Maintain income if you’re unable to work due to disability
  • Provide financial support to you and your loved ones after a death
  • Support educational and survivor needs for dependent children and spouses

Because the plan links directly to your service and compensation, it’s an integral part of your overall benefit picture.
