Overview of UMLifeOptions Plans

Local churches and other UMC salary-paying units can adopt any or all UMLifeOptions plans, which are fully insured and underwritten by Unum. Contact your plan sponsor for more information about the plans available to you.

Long-Term Disability (LTD) Plan

Long-term disability coverage provides monthly disability income in case an injury, illness or disability makes you unable to work or perform activities of daily living. Premiums are paid by the plan sponsor.

Eligibility

The LTD plan is for lay employees and clergy who are not eligible for the Comprehensive Protection Plan (CPP).

Benefits

  • Monthly income replacement (60% of pre-disability compensation up to $5,000 per month)
  • Up to 3% of plan sponsor’s contribution to your United Methodist Personal Investment Plan (UMPIP) account
  • Return-to-Work incentive

Lay Life Insurance Plan

Life insurance helps protect your family’s financial future so they can move forward with confidence after the loss of a loved one. Premiums are paid by the plan sponsor.

Eligibility

This plan is for lay employees and clergy who are not eligible for the CPP.

Benefits

  • Death benefit for active participants
  • Plan sponsors may elect to provide a death benefit for active participant dependents (spouse and/or children)
  • Plan sponsor may elect to provide a death benefit for retired participants
  • Accelerated death benefit (50%) in case of terminal illness
  • Accidental death and dismemberment benefit (optional, active participants only)
  • Survivor grief and financial counseling
  • Portable, convertible upon termination

Clergy Supplemental Life Insurance Plan

This supplemental coverage is for participants who are covered by the CPP. Premiums are paid by the plan sponsor.

Eligibility

The plan sponsor defines specific eligibility requirements for active clergy, spouse and dependent children of active clergy and retired clergy.

  • Death benefit for active participants
  • Plan sponsors may elect to provide a death benefit for active participant dependents (spouse and/or children)
  • Plan sponsor may elect to provide a death benefit for retired participants
  • Accelerated death benefit (50%) in case of terminal illness
  • Accidental death and dismemberment benefit (optional, active participants only)
  • Survivor grief and financial counseling
  • Portable, convertible upon termination

Optional Life Insurance Plan

If you want to purchase additional life insurance for yourself or your family, you may choose to enroll in this voluntary plan. Premiums are paid by the participant. Benefit amounts are selected by the participant.

Eligibility

Active and eligible lay employees enrolled in the UMLifeOptions Insurance Plan are eligible for the Optional Life Insurance Plan.

Benefits

  • Death benefits for the participant, spouse and dependent children
  • Accelerated death benefit (50%) in case of terminal illness
  • Waiver of premium while participant is receiving disability benefits
  • Accidental death and dismemberment benefit (optional, active participants only)
  • Portable, convertible for terminated participants
