Benefit Projections Pop-Up Troubleshooting

Windows XP Pop-Up Blocker

The Windows XP SP2 operating system has a built-in pop-up blocker that is independent of any third-party add-ons that disable pop-up windows. The default settings on this function will disable the Benefits Access "Benefit Projections" button, causing the page to appear to refresh without doing anything else. Please make sure that you have either turned off the Windows pop-up blocker or added gbophb.org to your list of allowed sites.

Turning off the pop-up blocker:

  1. Select Tools Pop-Up Blocker from the Internet Explorer menu
  2. Select "Turn Off Pop-Up Blocker" from the menu that appears

Allowing gbophb.org pop-ups:

  1. Select Tools Pop-Up Blocker from the Internet Explorer menu
  2. Select "Pop-Up Blocker Settings..." from the menu that appears
  3. In the "Address of website to allow" field, type in gbophb.org
  4. Click the "Add" button
  5. Click the "Close" button

Third-Party Pop-Up Blockers

Some sites offer add-on toolbars to Internet Explorer (such as Google Toolbar, Yahoo! Toolbar, etc.). These toolbars often contain options to block pop-up windows. While this helps cut down on unwanted advertising, it also can interfere with legitimate applications that rely on the same technology, such as our pension projections. It effectively disables the Benefits Access "Benefit Projections" button, causing the page to appear to refresh without doing anything else. To negate this, either turn off the pop-up blocking option while you are in Benefits Access, or add gbophb.org to your list of allowed sites.

Please refer to your toolbar's help menu, as these applications vary widely.

Internet Service Providers

Some Internet Service Providers (ISPs) such as Netscape or Earthlink also provide pop-up blockers incorporated into their access software. This too could interfere with the Benefits Access "Benefit Projections" button. Please refer to your ISP's help documentation if you need to change the pop-up options in your ISP's software.

Additional Troubleshooting

Windows XP Personal Firewall

You also may want to try turning off the Windows XP Personal Firewall to see if that affects the issue. To turn off the XP Personal Firewall:

  1. Open your Control Panel, and click on "Windows Security"
  2. Click on "Firewall"
  3. Select "Off"
  4. Click OK

Norton Personal Firewall

In addition to providing firewall protection, Norton Firewall may also block pop-up windows if you have it installed. To turn off the Norton Personal Firewall:

  1. Right-click on the firewall icon in your system tray (lower right Taskbar)
  2. Select "Disable"

You can loosen restrictions on specific sites by using the web assistant in your IE toolbar.

Adobe Acrobat Reader

In your Adobe Acrobat Reader preferences, make sure that Reader is set to display PDFs in the browser window. This is the default setting for Reader. To verify or change this preference:

  1. In Reader, select Edit Preferences
  2. Select "Internet" from the left-hand column
  3. Under "Web Browser Options," make sure that the box is checked next to "Display PDF in browser"
  4. Click OK

You may also want to try opening Adobe Acrobat Reader before attempting a benefit projection to see if that makes a difference.

Other Browsers

As a last effort, you may want to try accessing the pension projection using another browser (Netscape Navigator, Mozilla Firefox, Opera, etc.). This will at least help determine if the error is restricted to Internet Explorer or is more endemic to the operating system.
