Glenview, IL—The Wespath Benefits and Investments’ Center for Health was awarded the 2016 Best Employers for Healthy Lifestyles® (BEHL) Silver award from the National Business Group on Health (NBGH). The BEHL award recognizes companies for their innovative and comprehensive approaches to the health and well-being of employees, families, and the communities in which they live. This is the fourth recognition that Wespath Center for Health (CFH) has received from NBGH; previously receiving BEHL awards in 2012, 2013 and 2015.
This year’s recognition reflects a broader assessment of a program’s impact on the health of an organization’s employees since NBGH expanded the BEHL application criteria. In response, CFH submitted criteria across five dimensions of health and well-being: emotional, physical, financial, social and spiritual. The change in criteria resulted in fewer organizations receiving awards.
For the first time, NBGH examined how wellness programs impact the bottom line of an organization, assessing the link between wellness programs, increased productivity and engagement, and the core business of the organization. The CFH broadened its award submission data beyond HealthFlex plan results to include the wellness impact on behalf of the broader United Methodist Church. For example, financial well-being was highlighted in the 2016 application, as well as spiritual well-being—a unique area of impact for Wespath and the UMC.
Rooted in Wesleyan Teachings
The CFH submission was based on John Wesley’s teachings on wholistic living, demonstrating that wellness has been a part of the UMC thinking and practice since the 1700’s. Nurturing the link between well-being of clergy and the vitality and effectiveness of the UMC mission has been the goal of the Wespath Center for Health since its inception.
