UMLifeOptions* plans offer long-term disability (LTD) and life insurance coverage for eligible United Methodist clergy and lay employees. By offering UMLifeOptions plans, United Methodist Church (UMC) plan sponsors (e.g., UMC annual conferences, local churches and other group employers) provide an extra layer of financial protection for their clergy and employees.

UMLIfeOptions is:

  • Optional—Local churches and other UMC salary-paying units (SPUs) can adopt any or all UMLifeOptions plans. Plan sponsors pay premiums for most plans. (Participants pay premiums for Optional Life Insurance Plan.)
  • Flexible—Plan sponsors can customize plan options by selecting:
    • Which UMLifeOptions plans to offer
    • Eligibility criteria
    • Benefit amounts
    • Add-on features such as Accidental Death and Dismemberment coverage

Lay Long-Term Disability (LTD) Plan

Long-term disability coverage—for participants not eligible for the Comprehensive Protection Plan (CPP). Premiums are paid by the plan sponsor.

Eligibility (plan sponsor sets certain eligibility requirements)

  • Active lay employees
  • Active part-time local pastors who are not eligible for CPP

Benefits

  • Monthly income replacement (60% of pre-disability compensation, up to $5,000)
  • Up to 3% of plan sponsor’s contribution to claimant’s United Methodist Personal Investment Plan (UMPIP) account
  • Return-to-Work incentive

Lay Life Insurance Plan

Life insurance coverage for participants not eligible for the Comprehensive Protection Plan. Plan sponsors pay the plan premiums.

Eligibility

  • Active lay employees
  • Active part-time local pastors who are not eligible for CPP
  • Spouses and dependent children of eligible active lay employees and clergy
  • Retired lay employees (who satisfy certain eligibility requirements)
  • Retired clergy
  • Spouses and dependent children of eligible retired lay employees and clergy

Benefits

  • Death benefit for active participants and their dependents
  • Death benefit for retired participants
  • Accelerated death benefit (50%) in case of terminal illness
  • Accidental death and dismemberment benefit (optional, active participants only)
  • Survivor grief and financial counseling
  • Portable, convertible

Clergy Supplemental Life Insurance Plan

Life insurance for participants also covered by Comprehensive Protection Plan (CPP). Plan sponsors pay the plan premiums.

Eligibility (plan sponsor defines specific eligibility requirements)

  • Active clergy
  • Spouse and dependent children of active clergy (optional—if plan sponsor elects spouse or dependent coverage)
  • Retired clergy (who satisfy certain eligibility requirements)

Benefits

  • Death benefit (participant, spouse, dependent child)—plan sponsor selects benefit amounts
  • Accelerated death benefit (50%) in case of terminal illness
  • Survivor grief and financial counseling
  • Accidental death and dismemberment benefit (optional, active participants only)
  • Portable, convertible

Optional Life Insurance Plan

Supplemental life insurance for eligible clergy and lay employees. Participants can choose to enroll in this voluntary plan. Participants pay the plan premiums.

Eligibility

  • Active clergy in CPP (if plan sponsor elects plan)
  • Retired clergy in CPP (if plan sponsor elects plan)
  • Active lay employees in Lay Life Insurance Plan
  • Retired lay employees in Lay Life Insurance Plan

Benefits

  • Death benefit (participant, spouse, dependent child)—participant selects benefit amounts
  • Accelerated death benefit (50%) in case of terminal illness
  • Waiver of premium while participant is receiving disability benefits
  • Accidental death and dismemberment benefit (optional, active participants only)
  • Portable, convertible
